The Department of Scientific Research (full name: the Department of Scientific Research Management), is one of the Institute’s management organs. Its main duties are as follows: setting and carrying out of the Institute’s research plans; initiating, supervising, completing and evaluating projects of all sorts; organizing and coordinating academic activities of all sorts; organizing the Institute’s academic exchanges with the outside; handling the routine management of graduate students; managing societies and associations; etc..

Management of research projects: Applying for, collecting statistics on, and evaluating National Priority Research Projects and National Social Science Foundation Priority Projects. Applying for, collecting statistics on, and evaluating major CASS projects. Applying for, collecting statistics on, and evaluating priority projects and open tendering projects for CASS. Management of Institute-level projects. Management of projects entrusted to the Institute, and international cooperative projects.

Management of foreign academic exchange: Examination and approval of faculty visits to foreign countries. Reception of visiting overseas scholars and personnel of foreign organizations in China. Applying for, examining and approving international cooperative projects. Organization of international academic conferences.

Cultivation of graduate students: Recruiting Master’s and PhD students, and organizing their curricula and thesis defense. Handling the applications of working personnel for Master’s or Doctoral degrees. Organization the recruitment, education and thesis defense of foreign students (including post-graduates and PhD Candidates). Organization and management of various training courses.

Management of societies and associations: Routine management of the China Sun Yat-sen Society, the China Society for Modern Culture, the Society for the History of China’s Resistance War against Japan, and the Society for Sino-Russian Relations. Management of annual inspections of these societies.
