Sponsored by the Institute of Modern History, CASS, Modern Chinese History Studies is a journal specializing in academic research on modern Chinese history. Established in 1979, the journal initially was a quarterly publication, and has been published bimonthly since 1984. The editors-in-chief have been Qian Hong (1979-1985), Ding Shouhe (1979-1988), Xia Liangcai (1989-1994), an Zeng Yeying (1994 to present).

The journal promotes a practical style of scholarship, and meticulous and rigorous writing. It advocates free discussion of academic issues and encourages exploration and innovation. In addition to inviting famous Chinese and foreign scholars to write articles, the journal also pays particular attention to encouraging and helping young scholars who have a pioneering spirit. The journal has planned and organized a large number of discussions of important theories and methods, and other special topics.

The journal invites experts to review and appraise articles. It mainly publishes articles and monographs on the history of Chinese politics, economy, society, thought, culture, military affairs, diplomacy, etc., in the modern (1840-1949) era, as well as works on historical methodology. Major features in the journal include articles, biographies, state-of-the-field overviews, reviews of books and articles, reading notes, letters from scholars, academic news, and so on.
